Discrimination

Discrimination is what it’s called when people are mistreated based on specific characteristics. The characteristics that can be discriminated against include age, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation. You cannot make a hiring decision based on any of these factors. Hiring based on skills, abilities, and experience is not discrimination.
While it is illegal to discriminate in the workplace based on the characteristics described, it still happens. Discrimination may include being treated differently by coworkers, getting passed over for a promotion, not getting hired, or not being given equal opportunities in the workplace. Companies should work to provide a fair and safe workplace that employs a diverse range of staff members.
