These are five sample questions from Bryq’s Aircraft Mechanic assessment, a job-specific test for hiring aircraft mechanics, aircraft maintenance technicians and A&P mechanics. The full assessment covers five skills: aircraft maintenance, physical inspection, troubleshooting, repairing aircraft parts and maintenance logs. Questions combine technical and regulatory knowledge with realistic hangar and line maintenance scenarios, each with four options to choose from.
Aircraft Maintenance
Question
What is an Airworthiness Directive (AD)?
Select your answer
A legally enforceable requirement to correct an unsafe condition.
A manufacturer’s recommendation that operators may choose to follow.
A record of the repairs carried out on a specific aircraft.
An inspection interval set by an operator for its own fleet.
WHY IS THIS THE CORECT ANSWER
Airworthiness Directives are issued by the aviation authority when an unsafe condition exists, and compliance is mandatory for the aircraft to remain airworthy.
Physical Inspection
Question
During a walk-around, you find a small dent on the leading edge of a wing, and you aren’t sure whether it’s within limits. What should you do?
Select your answer
Measure the damage and check it against the Structural Repair Manual limits before deciding on release.
Record it in the log as a cosmetic dent for review at the next check.
Release the aircraft, since small dents on the leading edge are common.
Report it to your lead and let them decide whether the aircraft can fly.
WHY IS THIS THE CORECT ANSWER
Whether a dent is acceptable depends on its depth, size and location, and the Structural Repair Manual sets those limits. Measuring the damage and checking it against approved data gives an objective airworthiness decision.
Troubleshooting
Question
During the run-up, a piston engine shows a large RPM drop and runs rough on one magneto, but runs smoothly on both. What is the most likely cause?
Select your answer
A fouled spark plug or faulty ignition lead on the affected magneto’s side.
A fuel pump delivering low pressure.
An overly rich mixture setting.
Carburetor icing reducing airflow to all cylinders.
WHY IS THIS THE CORECT ANSWER
Each cylinder has two spark plugs fed by different magnetos, so a fault on one side only shows up when the engine runs on that magneto alone. A fouled plug or a faulty lead is the most common cause.
Repairing Aircraft Parts
Question
Why are 2017 and 2024 aluminum alloy “icebox” rivets kept refrigerated before use?
Select your answer
To delay age-hardening so they stay soft enough to drive.
To stop them from expanding while in storage.
To prevent corrosion from forming on the rivet surface.
To shrink them slightly so they fit tight holes more easily.
WHY IS THIS THE CORECT ANSWER
2017 and 2024 rivets are heat-treated to soften them for driving, but they start hardening again at room temperature. Refrigeration slows that age-hardening. Rivets left at room temperature too long must be heat-treated again before use, or they may crack when driven.
Maintenance Logs
Question
After completing a repair, you notice that a logbook entry made by a colleague earlier in the shift lists the wrong part number for a component they installed. What should you do?
Select your answer
Tell the colleague and your lead, and have the entry corrected using the approved procedure.
Leave it, since the right part was physically installed.
Ask the colleague to correct their entry before the aircraft is released.
Add a note beside their entry with the part number you believe is correct.
