Deductive Reasoning Assessment: Sample Questions | Bryq
Conditional Reference
Categorical Reasoning
Possibility & Model Construction
Belief-Independent Reasoning
Rule-Based Judgment
These are five sample questions from Bryq’s Deductive Reasoning assessment, a cognitive ability test for hiring roles that depend on rigorous, logical thinking, from analysts and engineers to consultants and managers. The full assessment covers five attributes: conditional inference, categorical reasoning, possibility and model construction, belief-independent reasoning, and rule-based judgment. The format blends text-based logic problems with image-based items, where candidates choose the arrangement that must be true, each with four options and one correct answer.

Question
If a tile is grey, then it is square.
If a tile is square, then it has a border.
The tile does not have a border.
Which of the following must be true?
Select your answer
The tile is not grey.
The tile is grey.
The tile is square but not grey.
Cannot be determined.
WHY IS THIS THE CORRECT ANSWER
Working backward through the chain: a tile with no border can’t be square (Rule 2), and a tile that isn’t square can’t be grey (Rule 1). So the tile must not be grey. “Square but not grey” fails at the first step, because a square tile would have a border.

Question
Some members of Group A are members of Group B.
No members of Group B are members of Group C.
Given only the above, which of the following must be true?
Select your answer
Some members of Group A are not members of Group C.
No members of Group A are members of Group C.
Some members of Group C are not members of Group A.
Cannot be determined.
WHY IS THIS THE CORRECT ANSWER
The members of Group A who are also in Group B can’t be in Group C, since no Group B members are. So at least some members of Group A are not in Group C. The premises say nothing about the other members of Group A, so “no members” is too strong, and reversing the statement to describe Group C doesn’t follow.

Question
If the outlined triangle is present, the solid circle must be absent.
The solid circle must always be present.
The outlined square can be present only if the outlined triangle is present.
Given only the constraints above, which of the following must be true?
Select your answer
A
B
C
D
WHY IS THIS THE CORRECT ANSWER
The solid circle is always present (Constraint 2), so the triangle must be absent (Constraint 1). Without the triangle, the square can’t be present either (Constraint 3). That leaves exactly one valid arrangement: the circle on its own. Option A breaks Constraint 3, and option B breaks Constraint 1.

Question
If an item is type-K, it is sent to Set X.
If an item is marked, it is not sent to Set X, regardless of its type.
The item is type-K and marked.
Which of the following must be true?
Select your answer
The item is not sent to Set X.
The item is sent to Set X.
The item is no longer type-K.
Cannot be determined.
WHY IS THIS THE CORRECT ANSWER
Rule 1 would send a type-K item to Set X, but Rule 2 explicitly overrides it for marked items, whatever their type. Because the item is marked, it is not sent to Set X. The rules don’t conflict, since Rule 2 says how to resolve the overlap, and being marked doesn’t change the item’s type.
