Plumbing Tools

These are five sample questions from Bryq’s Plumber assessment, a job-specific test for hiring plumbers, pipefitters and plumbing technicians. The full assessment covers five skills: plumbing tasks, pipe installation, leak repair, drainage repair and plumbing tools. Questions combine knowledge of plumbing codes, materials and tools with realistic repair scenarios, each with four options to choose from.

Plumbing Tasks

Question

Why is a vacuum breaker installed on an outdoor hose bib?

Select your answer

To prevent contaminated water from being siphoned back into the supply.

To regulate water pressure at the outdoor tap.

To stop water hammer when the tap is closed.

To stop the pipe freezing in cold weather.

WHY IS THIS THE CORECT ANSWER

A vacuum breaker lets air in to break that siphon, which is why codes require backflow protection on hose connections.

Pipe Installation

Question

You’re running a long, straight PEX supply line through basement floor joists. What must the installation allow for?

Select your answer

Thermal expansion, by leaving slight slack and using loose supports.

A continuous slope of 1/4 inch per foot toward the fixtures.

Rigid clamps at every joist to stop the pipe from moving.

Metal sleeves in every joist bore to prevent leaks.

WHY IS THIS THE CORECT ANSWER

PEX expands and contracts with temperature far more than copper. Leaving slight slack and using supports that let the pipe slide prevents stress on fittings, kinking and noise.

Leak Repair

Question

A customer reports a stain on the ceiling below an upstairs bathroom. It dries out but reappears after anyone showers. What is the best first step?

Select your answer

Test the drain, valve and enclosure separately with water to isolate the source.

Cut an inspection hole in the ceiling and look for the leak while the shower runs.

Repaint the ceiling with stain-blocking primer, since the leak stops between uses.

Replace the shower drain gasket, as it’s the most common cause of leaks after showering.

WHY IS THIS THE CORECT ANSWER

A leak that appears only after showers could come from the drain, the valve or water escaping the enclosure. Testing each one separately pinpoints the source before anything is opened up or replaced, avoiding unnecessary repairs and further damage.

Drainage Repair

Question

What can happen if a fixture’s trap arm is too long or pitched too steeply?

Select your answer

The trap seal can siphon out, letting sewer gas into the room.

Pressure on the fixture’s supply valves increases.

The fixture drains faster and clears clogs more effectively.

Drain water can flow back into the supply lines.

WHY IS THIS THE CORECT ANSWER

When the trap arm is too long or steep, the drop can exceed the trap’s depth, and flowing water creates suction that empties the trap. Without its water seal, the trap no longer blocks sewer gas, which is why codes limit trap arm length and slope.

Plumbing Tools

Question

Which method is most reliable for checking that a newly installed drain line has the correct slope?

Select your answer

A level placed on the pipe, checking the fall over a measured length.

A plumb bob dropped from the start and end of the run.

A chalk line snapped along the joists beside the pipe.

A tape measure from the floor to each end of the pipe.

WHY IS THIS THE CORECT ANSWER

A level on the pipe, used with a measured spacer or a slope vial, shows the actual fall, which is typically 1/4 inch per foot.
