Generate Targeted Follow-up Questions

Generate Targeted Follow-up Questions

Ask the questions that close the gaps, not the ones you already asked.

Ask the questions that close the gaps, not the ones you already asked.

What it does

Generate Targeted Follow-up Questions is a free AI skill for recruiters and hiring managers. Give it your hiring criteria and interview notes. It shows where the evidence is thin or conflicting, then writes 3-7 probing questions for the candidate that close those gaps.

It works in Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and other AI Assistants.

You give it

You give it

  • The hiring criteria for the role

  • Interview notes, scorecards or a debrief summary

  • Optional: the next step and its length, who will ask, questions already asked

You get

You get

  • Where the evidence stands for each criterion: shown, open or not assessed

  • 3-7 prioritised questions tied to your criteria, with probes and what a strong answer shows

  • A plan that fits your call length

  • A reference-check version, and who asks what, when

How it helps

It turns the notes from a finished interview round into a short question plan for the next conversation with the candidate.

The gaps that matter, in order

It puts the gaps in order: must-have criteria first, then interviewer disagreements, then thin evidence. Criteria already shown are left out.

New evidence, not repeats

Each question asks for a different example or tests the exact point of doubt, quoting the gap from your notes. Strong answers are described in observable terms, so scoring stays consistent.

Neutral in both directions

Questions never assume a doubt is true, and never ask about traits or personal life. A gap is "not yet shown", never "lacks". With several finalists, it suggests asking each the same core questions.

Honest about what a call can show

Where questions won't test a criterion, it says so and suggests another method, such as a short work sample.

Why we think it's useful

A follow-up call is short. We think every minute of it should go on a named gap from your own notes, and this skill is built to keep it there. You review the questions and decide what to ask.

Data Analyst, Kestrel Mobility. Criteria: 1) SQL and data modelling (must-have), 2) Explaining findings to non-technical people (must-have), 3) Prioritising requests, 4) Working with stakeholders. Want a 30 min follow-up call with D.O. next week, Lena (hiring manager) will run it. Also might do references.

Lena's notes: talked well about the pricing dashboard, "we rebuilt the whole data model" but unclear what D.O. did herself. SQL questions went fine but only basic joins. Explained churn findings to me really clearly, used a simple chart. 4/5.

Jon (ops lead) notes: good communicator. Asked how she handles 10 requests at once, said "I just work late". Didn't get to stakeholders, ran out of time. Explaining: 3/5, "a bit too detailed for ops people".

1. SQL and data modelling

  • Why it matters: Must-have. Notes say "we rebuilt the whole data model", but D.O.'s own part is unclear.

  • Question: "In the pricing data model rebuild, which parts did you design or build yourself?"

  • Probes: "What trade-off did you make, and why?", "What would you change now?"

  • A strong answer would show: Specific tables or logic she built, a design choice she can explain, and its effect.

Which AI do you use?

Closing the predictive-validity loop requires structured pre-hire data on every requisition. Assessment scores. Behavioral profiles. Hard-skills signals including AI fluency. Without that dataset, you cannot correlate pre-hire signals with post-hire QoH. You cannot tune the next cohort sharper than the last. The hiring system stays static. The score drifts.

Bryq builds the pre-hire dataset that makes the loop possible.

Better with Bryq

Already use Bryq? Add your assessment results.

Link your Bryq account to your AI assistant, and five skills can include your candidates' Bryq results. For example, your debrief shows them next to the interview notes, and your follow-up questions focus on where the two differ. The link only reads data; it never changes anything in Bryq. Results you bring into a chat are shared with your AI provider, like anything else you paste in. Every skill works fully without it.

FAQ

Find answers to the most frequently asked questions

Start from the gaps in your notes, not from a list of stock questions. For each criterion, decide whether the evidence is shown, open or not assessed, then ask for a new example that tests the exact point of doubt and write down what a strong answer would show. This skill drafts those steps for you to review.
It allows about 8-10 minutes per question, plus time to open and close. What fits is marked core, one more "if time allows", and the rest moves to another step, such as the reference check.
Yes. It turns the same criteria into questions about what a former manager or colleague saw at first hand, asking for examples, not ratings. References are taken only with the candidate's agreement.
It says so and suggests a better method, such as a short work sample for hands-on technical skill.
