These are five sample questions from Bryq's Account Manager assessment, a soft skills test for hiring account managers and key account managers who manage existing business customers. The full assessment covers five skills: customer-centered decision-making, communication and negotiation, accountability and follow-through, trusted partnerships and teamwork, and account growth. Each question describes a realistic account management situation and asks which action would be most effective, with four options to choose from.

Question

A client that uses your company's office-printing service asks for three extra printers on each floor. Print logs show the existing printers are rarely busy, but staff often walk to the far end of the floor because the nearest printer has run out of paper. The office manager wants a quote by Friday. Which of these actions would be the most effective?

Select your answer

Ask the office manager what problem staff are facing, and share what the print logs show.

Send a quote for the three extra printers by Friday, as the office manager asked.

Tell the office manager the extra printers are not needed, since the existing ones are rarely busy.

Send quotes for several printer models, so the office manager can compare the options.

WHY IS THIS THE CORRECT ANSWER

Understanding the client's real problem and sharing the evidence leads to the right solution. Quoting as asked, refusing outright or sending more options all skip the question of what staff actually need.

Question

A recruitment agency uses your company’s document-storage service for its paper files. At renewal, its office manager asks for a 15% cut in the monthly fee because the agency now stores far fewer files. Its storage volume has fallen by 30%, and your pricing allows fees to fall in line with volume. She also mentions the agency is starting to scan its files. Which of these actions would be the most effective?

Select your answer

Offer a fee reduction in line with the lower volume, and discuss the agency’s plans for scanning.

Agree to the full 15% cut straight away, so that the renewal goes through smoothly.

Keep the fee unchanged, since the contract does not require a price review at renewal.

Send the office manager your price list for digital storage, and leave the fee as it is.

WHY IS THIS THE CORRECT ANSWER

A good negotiation offers what the facts justify and looks for value that serves both sides. Agreeing to the full cut gives away margin without reason, and refusing ignores a fair request. Sending a price list sidesteps the fee question altogether.

Accountability & Follow-Through

Intermediate

Question

After a meeting with a manufacturing client, you promised to send updated delivery dates for its spare parts by Wednesday. On Wednesday morning, the warehouse tells you two of the dates are still unconfirmed. The client's maintenance planner is waiting for the dates to schedule repairs. Which of these actions would be the most effective?

Select your answer

Send the confirmed dates now, say when the other two will follow, and chase the warehouse.

Wait until all the dates are confirmed, then send the complete update to the planner in one email.

Ask the warehouse to send the dates to the planner directly once they are ready.

Send all the dates now, using your best estimate for the two unconfirmed ones.

WHY IS THIS THE CORRECT ANSWER

Keeping a commitment means delivering what you can on time, being clear about what is still open and driving it to completion. Waiting, handing it off or guessing leaves the client without reliable information.

Trusted Partnerships & Teamwork

Intermediate

Question

A software client's finance team has asked for a change to how your company invoices them. Your billing team says it can make the change, but only from next quarter. The client's finance lead says this is too late and asks you to sort it out with your colleagues. Which of these actions would be the most effective?

Select your answer

Find out from billing what blocks an earlier start, then agree a realistic plan with the client.

Tell the finance lead the billing team has decided, and the change will start next quarter.

Promise the change for this quarter, and ask the billing team to find a way to deliver it.

Ask your manager to raise the issue with the head of the billing team.

WHY IS THIS THE CORRECT ANSWER

Working with internal colleagues to understand their constraints, then agreeing a realistic plan, protects both the client relationship and the team relationship. The other options either let one side down or escalate too early.

Account Growth

Intermediate

Question

A coworking company uses your company's IT support at its four city offices. Its operations manager mentions that it will open two new offices next year and has not yet decided how to support them. Your company already supports other businesses in both of those cities. Which of these actions would be the most effective?

Select your answer

Ask about the new offices' plans and timing, and offer to propose support for them.

Wait for the client to ask for a proposal, so that you do not appear pushy.

Send a standard price list for new offices, and ask the manager to get back to you.

Offer a discount if the client commits now to using you at both new offices.

WHY IS THIS THE CORRECT ANSWER

Growing an account starts with understanding the customer's plans and offering help at the right moment. Waiting misses the opportunity, while a price list or an early discount pushes a sale before the need is understood.
