Microsoft Word Assessment: Sample Questions | Bryq

Beginner

Advanced
These are three sample questions from Bryq’s Microsoft Word assessment, a software skills test for hiring administrative assistants, executive assistants, legal and HR coordinators, and other roles that produce documents every day. The full assessment covers three levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced, from everyday document formatting to content management, long-document tools, and automation. The format blends text-based multiple-choice questions with image-based ones, each with four options and one correct answer.
Beginner

Question

You want to reduce the blank space around the edges of every page so that more text fits on each one. What should you do?

Select your answer

Go to Layout > Margins > Narrow.
Go to Home > Paragraph > Indents.
Go to Insert > Page Break.
Go to Design > Page Borders.

WHY IS THIS THE CORRECT ANSWER

The Margins menu on the Layout tab sets the blank space around the edges of every page, and choosing Narrow reduces it so more text fits. Indents only shift individual paragraphs, a page break pushes content onto a new page, and page borders add a decorative frame.

Intermediate

Question

The spacing in your document looks uneven, and you want to see every space, tab and paragraph mark to find out why. Which button should you click?

Select your answer

A

B

C

D

WHY IS THIS THE CORRECT ANSWER

Show/Hide ¶ displays hidden formatting marks, such as spaces, tabs, paragraph marks and page breaks, which makes stray spacing easy to spot and remove. Clear All Formatting resets text to the default style, Line and Paragraph Spacing changes the spacing itself, and Sort reorders lines or list items.

Advanced

Question

In a 40-page contract, the client’s name appears many times and may change before signing. You want every instance to update automatically from one place. What should you do?

Select your answer

Insert the name as a Document Property control everywhere it appears, then edit the property once.
Use Find & Replace to change the name whenever it’s updated.
Create an AutoCorrect entry that expands a short code into the client’s name.
Save the name as an AutoText entry and insert it in each location.

WHY IS THIS THE CORRECT ANSWER

Document Property controls are linked to a single stored value, so changing it once updates every place it appears. Find & Replace works but must be repeated for every change and can miss variations. AutoCorrect and AutoText only insert static text, which won’t update later.
