Advanced
These are three sample questions from Bryq’s Tableau assessment, a technical test for hiring data analysts, BI analysts and data visualization specialists. The full assessment covers three levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced, from building basic charts and connecting to data to dashboard design, calculated fields and parameters. Each question is multiple choice, with one correct answer out of four options.

Question
In Tableau, what does a green pill on the Columns shelf indicate?
Select your answer
A continuous field that creates an axis.
A discrete field that creates headers.
A field that has a filter applied to it.
A calculated field created by the user.
WHY IS THIS THE CORRECT ANSWER
Green pills are continuous fields, which Tableau draws as a continuous axis, such as a range of sales values or a timeline. Blue pills are discrete fields and create separate headers. Whether a field is filtered or calculated isn’t shown by the pill’s color.

Question
A bar chart shows sales by region, and you want each bar to show its share of total sales instead. What is the quickest way to do this?
Select your answer
Apply a Percent of Total quick table calculation to the sales measure.
Create a new data extract that includes percentages.
Add a context filter on the region field.
Add a reference line showing total sales.
WHY IS THIS THE CORRECT ANSWER
A quick table calculation works out each bar’s share from the values already in the view, with no new fields or data changes needed. A reference line only marks a value on the axis, and an extract or context filter changes which data is loaded or filtered, not how values are expressed.

Question
You need each customer’s total lifetime sales, regardless of which dimensions are in the view, so you can group customers into value bands. Which calculation is correct?
Select your answer
{FIXED [Customer ID] : SUM([Sales])}
{INCLUDE [Customer ID] : SUM([Sales])}
WINDOW_SUM(SUM([Sales]))
SUM([Sales])
WHY IS THIS THE CORRECT ANSWER
A FIXED level of detail expression calculates at the level you specify, here one value per customer, regardless of the dimensions in the view, so it can be used to group customers into bands. INCLUDE adds detail relative to the view, WINDOW_SUM depends on how the table is laid out, and a plain SUM changes with whatever is on the shelves.
