Account managers now do much of their work with AI. They prepare quotes, proposals and renewal emails with AI assistants. They read AI summaries and scores of their accounts and customer conversations. Many also sell products with AI features of their own, which customers ask about before buying, during rollout and at renewal.
The usual hiring evidence doesn’t show how well someone handles any of that. A CV records results, past roles and the software a candidate has used. Interviews go deeper, but on their own they still depend on how well a candidate describes the work.
So test it directly. Put candidates in real account scenarios with AI involved, at whichever stage fits your process. Then use the results to focus your interviews where each candidate needs a closer look.
Why CV screening is not enough, and where interviews come in
A CV lists past roles and results. It rarely shows which parts of that work involved AI, or how well the candidate handled them. Without assessment results to go on, interviews tend to ask every candidate the same general questions about AI. A candidate who’s fluent with AI and one who isn’t can answer those equally well. A real work scenario, with AI part of the task, tells them apart.
What AI skills mean for an account manager
Working well with AI in account work comes down to three skills. AI Fluency for Account Managers measures all three, and scores each one on its own.
Preparing customer deliverables with AI. Directs AI on the work prepared for customers, such as quotes, proposals, renewal emails and business reviews. That means deciding what the AI prepares and what comes from company systems, and briefing it with the facts, terms and goals each deliverable depends on. It also means presenting each figure and commitment as it really applies to the customer.
Analyzing account data with AI. Turns AI analysis of accounts and customer conversations into sound account decisions. The AI summarizes accounts, scores renewals and suggests where to focus. Doing this well means knowing what each result is based on and what it leaves out, and weighing it against what you know of the customer.
Advising customers on AI products. Advises customers on the AI features of the product being sold, before buying, during rollout and at renewal. Doing this well means setting expectations the customer’s own results will bear out, and explaining what the feature’s results mean for the customer’s decisions.
Why account experience or AI knowledge alone is not enough
AI fluency in account work sits where two kinds of knowledge meet. One is knowing the work: which figures and terms a customer will hold you to, which accounts need attention, and what a buyer needs to hear. The other is knowing how AI behaves: what it was given, what it never saw, and what its summaries and scores are built on. A candidate can have either one without the other.
That’s why Bryq measures AI fluency in two ways. The general AI Fluency Assessment covers how a candidate works with AI in any role. AI Fluency for Account Managers adds to it, showing whether a candidate brings account knowledge and AI knowledge to the same work. In every scenario, the weakest option is the move a capable account manager without AI fluency would make.
When to run the assessments
Every hiring team runs its own process, and the assessments fit at more than one stage. Run them early to screen a large pool with Profile Fit, on the longlist alongside the Account Managers test, or on the shortlist.
Assessment | What it shows you | Common uses |
|---|---|---|
How the candidate works with AI inside account work, across the three skills above. | First screening, the longlist, or the shortlist. | |
How the candidate works with AI in any role, across five skills: AI task strategy, prompting and interaction quality, critical evaluation and validation, ethical and responsible use, and workflow integration and output quality. | Optional, at first screening or on the longlist. |
The two report separate scores, so you see both the wider picture and the one specific to account work. Both are built on peer-reviewed and subject-matter expert research, and validated by I/O psychologists. For the full set of assessments for this hire, see How to hire account managers.
Using the scores in hiring
The report gives a score for each skill. Together they make an overall score. There’s no pass mark.
At first screening, the scores help you decide who moves forward. Set your own threshold, or look first at the skill that matters most for the role.
On the longlist, the scores sit next to the results of the other assessments the role requires, so you can compare candidates skill by skill.
On the shortlist, the scores travel with each candidate into your interviews and role-plays. Interview time then goes where each profile is weakest, and Bryq’s free follow-up questions AI skill helps you draft the questions.
At every stage, the decision stays with the hiring team.
For current account managers
The same assessment works for account managers already on your team. It gives a baseline of who works well with AI today, skill by skill. A talent team can see where to focus development, and use it as a starting point for internal moves.
Frequently asked questions
How do I assess AI skills when hiring account managers? Put candidates in real account scenarios with AI involved, such as a renewal email drafted by an AI assistant or an AI score of an account. AI Fluency for Account Managers does this across three skills, with a score for each and an overall score.
What AI skills should account managers have? Three: preparing customer deliverables with AI, analyzing account data with AI, and advising customers on AI products.
Does the assessment test a specific AI tool? No. Each scenario describes the AI in plain, vendor-neutral words, and no scenario names a product.
Do I need both AI assessments? No. AI Fluency for Account Managers covers AI inside account work. The general AI Fluency Assessment covers AI skills that apply in any role. Teams add it when they want that wider view.
