The best pre-employment assessment tools in 2026 show who a candidate is and how well they fit the job. They match each person to the role and to your company's culture, then add the skills the work needs. Bryq does all of this in one profile: cognitive ability, personality traits, soft and hard skills, including AI fluency. We compared it with eleven other talent assessment tools, from TestGorilla and SHL to HireVue and iMocha.
Every hire is a bet on a person. Will they do the job well? Will they still be glad they joined a year from now? Talent assessment tools help you answer both, but they look at very different things. Some describe a candidate’s personality and leave the rest to you. Some test skills and little else. A few match the whole person to the role. Fewer still match them, in any depth, to the culture of the company they would join.
We compared twelve of them side by side: Bryq, TestGorilla, Criteria, SHL, Harver, The Predictive Index, HireVue, Testlify, Maki, Canditech, Cangrade and iMocha. The comparison is written for HR and talent acquisition teams choosing a talent assessment tool, for hiring or for developing the people they already have.
How we chose. We compared the twelve platforms on the seven questions below. Every rating comes from each platform’s published pages, with a few points from published product comparisons. Bryq makes one of the platforms on the list. Every source is listed at the end.
How we compared the platforms
We asked seven questions. The first three are about the person: who they are, and how well they fit the role and your company. The next two cover what they can do. The last two cover trust and cost.
Does it build a full picture of the person? Personality traits and cognitive ability show how someone works with others, learns and solves problems.
Does it match that picture to the role? A personality report describes someone. Fit to the role scores that profile against what the specific role needs.
Does it match the person to your culture? Fit to the culture compares candidates with your company’s own values, using a validated method. A generic values quiz is a start, and it is a smaller thing.
Does it measure soft skills, hard skills and coding? Soft skills show how someone works with others. Hard skills show what they know about the job and its tools. Coding tests show whether a developer can write working code.
Does it measure AI fluency? How well someone works with AI now matters in almost every role.
How was it validated? For personality and cognitive assessments, look for validation by I/O psychologists and published research. For hiring use, check for independent bias audits.
Who is it for, and how is it priced? Hiring, current employees or both, and whether pricing is published.
The twelve platforms at a glance

How to read it. A full circle means the platform offers that capability as a validated part of how it assesses people. A half circle means a basic version, such as personality tests picked from a library, a generic values test, or coding through a partner. An empty circle means we found no such capability on its pages. Questions 6 and 7 are answered in words.
The two fit columns tell most of the story. Six platforms score personality and cognitive results against the role. Bryq is rated full on fit to the culture, and four other platforms offer a partial version. The next section explains every rating, question by question, and every source is listed at the end of the article.

Other platforms we checked. CodeSignal and HackerRank focus mainly on technical hiring and are covered in our comparison of AI skills assessment platforms. Why fit to the role and to the culture matters
A personality profile tells you who someone is. It can’t tell you, by itself, whether that person suits the job in front of them, or the company they’d join.
That’s the step from a description to a decision. Fit to the role scores the profile against what the job needs. Fit to the culture scores it against the values your company works by. Skills and AI fluency then show what the person can already do, and how they work with the tools your team uses every day.
Bryq puts all of it in one profile. Candidates take one assessment. Bryq builds their persona, a complete personality profile, and matches it to the role through Profile Fit and to your company through culture fit. Cognitive ability, soft and hard skills and AI fluency sit in the same profile. The persona stays useful after the hire, so it’s ready when that person is considered for their next role.
The platforms in detail
Bryq
Bryq starts with the person. Its psychometric assessment builds a complete personality profile, the candidate’s persona, alongside cognitive ability. Profile Fit matches that persona to the ideal profile for each role. Culture fit matches it to your company, against a benchmark I/O psychologists build from your own values. Soft and hard skills, including AI fluency, sit in the same profile, so hiring managers see one view of every candidate. All its assessments are validated by I/O psychologists, and its simulation-based AI Fluency Assessment is built on peer-reviewed and subject-matter expert research. The same profile works for candidates and current employees. Bryq customers report a 3x improvement in quality of hire, 47% lower attrition and 2x faster hiring.
Best fit: teams that want to know who a candidate is, how well they fit the role and the culture, and what they can do, in one view.
Worth knowing: there’s a free trial, plans start at $69 a month with unlimited assessments, and Bryq integrates with your ATS in under a week.
TestGorilla
TestGorilla offers a large test library covering cognitive ability, personality, situational judgment and role-specific skills, plus AI fluency tests and AI video interviews. Teams combine up to five tests in one assessment. Its Culture Add test compares the values candidates choose with values you rate in a survey. A science team of I/O psychologists and data scientists validates the tests.
Best fit: teams that want to build assessments from a broad library.
Worth knowing: AI interviews are on the Plus plan, and paid plans are billed annually.
Compare: Bryq vs TestGorilla
Criteria
Criteria offers a portfolio of separate tests: the Criteria Cognitive Aptitude Test, the game-based Cognify, the Employee Personality Profile, the Emotify emotional intelligence test, and workplace alignment, integrity and basic skills tests. Teams compare each score with suggested ranges for the role, supported by validation studies. Its Workplace Alignment Assessment compares the work factors a candidate values with what your organization offers.
Best fit: teams that want a wide choice of separate tests, including emotional intelligence.
Worth knowing: its site showed no dedicated AI skills assessment as of November 2026.
SHL
SHL is a long-established assessment provider for hiring and development. Its portfolio includes the Occupational Personality Questionnaire, Verify ability tests, the Motivation Questionnaire, Job-Focused Assessments, situational judgement tests, video interviews and an AI Readiness Profile. The personality questionnaire maps to the competencies each role needs, and its Automata simulations test coding in more than 40 languages.
Best fit: large organizations running structured assessment programs across many roles and levels.
Worth knowing: smaller businesses can buy through SHL Online, a self-service store.
Harver
Harver is built for high-volume hiring. It combines personality questionnaires and cognitive ability tests with situational judgment tests built around each employer’s jobs, and gives each candidate a match score against a job profile. Culture fit is one of its questionnaire modules. It also offers game-based assessments and, since April 2026, AI PREVAIL, an AI readiness assessment.
Best fit: teams hiring in high volumes for similar frontline roles.
Worth knowing: AI PREVAIL also covers existing employees, not only candidates.
The Predictive Index
The Predictive Index pairs an untimed Behavioral Assessment of about 6 minutes with a 12-minute Cognitive Assessment of verbal, numerical and abstract reasoning. A Job Target sets the requirements for each job, and candidates get a Job Match score against it. The assessments sit inside a wider platform for hiring and managing teams.
Best fit: teams that want short behavioral and cognitive assessments tied to job targets, plus tools for managing teams.
Worth knowing: plans start at $10,000 a year, priced by headcount. PI’s product list did not include skills tests, an AI skills assessment or a culture fit score as of November 2026.
Compare: Bryq vs The Predictive Index
HireVue
HireVue combines game-based psychometric assessments with AI-scored interview questions, virtual job tryouts and technical assessments. Its games infer personality and work style, how people work with others, and how they work with information, and its assessments score job fit for each role. Candidates can complete games and interview questions in under 20 minutes.
Best fit: large organizations that want assessment and video interviewing together.
Worth knowing: HireVue’s games are available in more than 35 languages, and it has published an external I-O psychology audit. Its site showed no dedicated AI skills assessment as of November 2026.
Compare: Bryq vs HireVue

Best fit: teams that want a large test library with published pricing.
Worth knowing: plans start at $139 a month. Its site showed no dedicated AI skills assessment as of November 2026.
Compare: Bryq vs Testlify
Maki
Maki offers a library of more than 150 tests, including its MIND cognitive test and a six-factor personality inventory, plus an AI proficiency assessment. Screening and voice interview agents handle the early stages of hiring. Maki’s science team builds its assessments using established psychometric processes.
Best fit: teams that want assessments and AI screening agents in one place.
Worth knowing: Maki’s AI proficiency assessment comes at no extra cost for existing customers.
Compare: Bryq vs Maki People
Canditech
Canditech tests cognitive abilities, personality, technical and soft skills, and AI skills on one platform. Its job simulations can include AI tools such as ChatGPT, and its AI Assessment Builder generates tests from a job description. Assessments are built by industry experts and reviewed by a PhD-level psychometrics team.
Best fit: teams that want custom, job-specific simulations.
Worth knowing: Canditech lists more than 40 ATS integrations.
Compare: Bryq vs Canditech
Cangrade
Cangrade’s Pre-Hire Assessment measures personality traits and soft skills, and predicts fit and retention for each role through its Success Models. Culture is folded into those custom models. It also identifies candidates’ motivations and generates interview guides from the results. Cangrade has published research on reducing adverse impact in personality-based selection.
Best fit: teams that want predictions of fit and retention for each role.
Worth knowing: it measures soft skills it links to AI-era roles, such as critical thinking, but its site showed no dedicated AI skills assessment as of November 2026.
Compare: Bryq vs Cangrade
iMocha
iMocha focuses on skills assessment and skills intelligence, with role-based tests, cognitive ability tests and a GenAI Readiness series covering prompt engineering, responsible AI and AI coding tools. It works for hiring and for mapping the skills of existing teams.
Best fit: teams that want detailed skills testing, including AI skills for technical roles.
Worth knowing: iMocha does not offer personality tests, according to its own comparison post.

What to check before you buy
Take the seven questions above into every vendor conversation, then check these:
Fit: how the platform scores candidates against the role and against your culture, and what the score is based on.
Predictive validity for your roles: validation studies, or an independent bias audit.
Cost at your hiring volume: counted per candidate assessed, not per hire.
ATS integration: with the system you already use.
Candidate completion: how long the assessment takes, and how many candidates finish it.
Role-specific test quality: for the roles you hire most.
Run a short pilot on one role before you sign.
Types of talent assessment
Most talent assessment tools combine several of these:
Cognitive ability tests: how someone learns, reasons and solves problems.
Personality assessments: how someone tends to work and deal with others.
Skills tests: soft skills, hard skills and coding for the role.
Job simulations: realistic tasks taken from the job.
Culture fit: how a candidate’s values compare with your company’s.
AI fluency: how well someone works with AI.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best pre-employment assessment tools? Start with what you need to see in each candidate. Bryq matches the whole person to the role and to your culture in one profile, with skills and AI fluency alongside. Other tools lead with one part of hiring, such as HireVue with video interviews, Canditech with job simulations and iMocha with coding simulators.
Best talent assessment software for a company hiring 500 people a year At 500 hires a year, you assess far more candidates than you hire. So compare cost per candidate assessed, not per hire, and check how each tool connects to your ATS. Bryq offers a free trial, and its plans start at $69 a month with unlimited assessments. It integrates with your ATS in under a week. For a large program across many roles and levels, also compare SHL, Harver and HireVue.
Best pre-employment assessment software for mid-sized companies Look for published pricing, a quick ATS setup and one platform that covers the roles you hire most. Bryq offers a free trial, and its plans start at $69 a month. It integrates with your ATS in under a week. TestGorilla has a free plan. Testlify’s plans start at $139 a month. The Predictive Index starts at $10,000 a year and says it is designed for companies with 50 to 500+ employees.
Which pre-employment assessment tools integrate with Greenhouse and Workday? Check each vendor’s integration list for your exact system. Bryq integrates natively with Greenhouse and connects to your ATS in under a week. The Predictive Index lists a Greenhouse integration. Testlify lists more than 100 ATS integrations, and Canditech more than 40. Ask each vendor whether Workday is one of them.
Which pre-employment assessments have published validity evidence? Several vendors publish validation material on their own sites. Criteria cites validation studies. The Predictive Index has a research and validity section. HireVue has published an external I-O psychology audit. Cangrade has published adverse impact research. Whichever tool you consider, ask for its validation studies for roles like yours.
Best pre-employment assessment software for high-volume hiring Harver is built for high-volume frontline hiring. HireVue combines assessment with video interviewing for large organizations. Bryq supports high-volume hiring with one assessment that scores every candidate against the role and your culture. Compare how each handles your applicant numbers and what you pay per candidate assessed.
What is culture fit in a talent assessment? Culture fit compares a candidate with the values a company works by. Some platforms use a separate values survey. Bryq scores candidates against a culture benchmark that I/O psychologists build from the company’s values, using the same assessment as everything else.
What is the difference between a personality test and role fit? A personality test describes how someone tends to work. Role fit scores that profile against what a specific role needs, so you can see how well the person suits the job.
